What is the difference between an interior architect and an interior decorator?
The difference is not the degree or the licence — it is what exists at the end of the work. An interior architect delivers construction documentation: dimensioned drawings, junction details, schedules, a full FF&E register and priceable quantities that a contractor can build and price from. A decorator selects within the existing space — colour, material, furniture, textiles — and typically does not produce buildable documentation.

Most descriptions of this online are inaccurate, so it is worth stating what is not true. An interior architect does not need an architecture degree — interior architecture is its own field of study. An interior architect does not design structure: touching a load-bearing wall is the work of a structural engineer and an architect, even when the idea originates with the interior designer. And chamber authorisation is not the dividing line either, because the majority of interior work is not permit-bound. Neither the diploma nor the chamber membership is the filter common usage takes it for.
The real dividing line is technical depth and coordination. An interior architect works where the space itself changes: wall positions, openings, lighting and electrical layouts, service provision, bespoke joinery. That requires engaging engineering designers — structural, mechanical, electrical, fire — and reconciling their drawings into one coordinated set. That coordination is most of the work, and it is not part of a decorator's role.
The other difference: materials, technology and terminology
The third layer of interior design work is materials, construction technology and precise technical language. A well-prepared decorator may know all of this; the difference is not the title but whether someone knows construction technology to the depth where decisions become numbers — and whether they know who determines which number.
Fabric selection does not start with the colour of the year. For hotel headboard upholstery, abrasion resistance is described by the Martindale count to EN ISO 12947 — public areas typically start at 25,000 rubs and severe use above 40,000. On a headboard, though, abrasion is the lesser question: the binding requirement is ignitability, to EN 1021-1 (smouldering cigarette) and EN 1021-2 (match flame equivalent). Anyone who only asks for the Martindale figure has checked the wrong number.
A hotel room partition is not plasterboard but the intersection of two requirements — and the interior designer invents neither of them. Fire resistance is always set by the fire safety designer, from the building's risk classification and compartment layout. An EI 90 wall is justified on a compartment boundary; a room-to-room partition inside a compartment is normally held to less. The acoustic requirement — the field-measured weighted sound reduction index, R'w — follows from the applicable standard and the operator's brand standard; R'w = 65 dB is a demanding, five-star level figure, not a general rule.
The interior designer's work starts after that: turning a requirement into a build-up. Double plasterboard each side, stud spacing, insulation thickness and every service penetration together produce the result. Two sockets set back-to-back in the same stud bay will destroy the wall's acoustic performance — a good laboratory figure counts for nothing if the electrical layout perforates it.
And from that follows the fixing batten. If reinforcement is not built into the partition at headboard, television and mirror height before the plasterboard is closed, everything is later fixed with toggle anchors — weaker, prone to movement, and liable to tear out at the first maintenance. The position of the batten is a decision taken before the wall is built. It is the cheapest item in the room, and the most expensive one to omit.
The fourth layer is the language itself. Technical terms are not synonyms: “soundproofing” and airborne sound reduction are different things; Rw is a laboratory value and R'w is measured on the built structure in situ; EI, EW and REI describe three different fire performances. Putting the wrong designation on a drawing is not imprecision — it produces a different wall. A contractor builds what the drawing says.
This is the layer that drives the design fee. Not the number of drawings, but whether there is a standard, a build-up, a manufacturer's data sheet and an engineering sign-off behind each one.
A simple decision rule
If the space itself changes, or a contractor needs documentation to price from, the job needs an interior architect. If the space is fixed and the only question is what goes into it, a decorator is enough — and will rightly cost less.
The common failure between the two: a project starts with a decorator, and midway it emerges that water cannot be run to where the kitchen was planned, or that the wall in question is load-bearing. By then the question is no longer about design but about cost: the decision is made, the furniture is ordered, and the constraint has only just surfaced. Skipping documentation is not a saving — it is a deferral.
How it works at Ren Design

The design and the technical documentation are produced by the interior architect, the engineering drawings are coordinated by the studio, and the furnishing — the FF&E — is assembled by the styling lead inside the designer's coding system. This matters because the two cannot be separated mid-project. Furniture dimensions determine clearances; the type of light fitting determines where power has to be run; floor build-up determines threshold heights. Where these sit with separate parties, the discrepancy appears on site — usually once the wall is already up.
When choosing, avoid these: engaging a decorator for a project where the floor plan changes; paying an interior architect to choose cushions; treating the diploma or chamber membership as the basis of the decision instead of asking what documentation will be delivered; and splitting design and furnishing between two parties without settling which of them answers for the result.
The single best question to ask before appointing anyone: what drawing set do you hand over at the end, and can a contractor price from it? The answer tells you more than any title on a business card.
