From the sauna to the court
Interior design for the Onyx Padel club in Szentendre, across 1,400 m²: one competition court and four more, a café, a gallery, changing rooms — and a sauna that looks out over the courts.
The brief
Five padel courts in one hall, one of them a competition court. Around them goes everything that makes a club a club: reception, café, changing rooms, wellness, and room for people who are not playing — only waiting or watching.
In a padel club, guests spend more of their time off the court than on it — before the game and after. The question was how to tie that time to the view of the courts.
The response
The club's defining feature is the sauna. It sits on the gallery level above the long wall of the competition court, with one large, undivided glass wall facing the courts. Whoever sits inside watches the match. From outside, the glass carries a mirror film: a player looking up sees only the hall reflected back. Wellness is not a hidden corner of the building but the best view in the hall.
The client asked for a warm, family-like club. So living-room furniture groups sit between the courts — sofas, armchairs, lamps and plants — where a waiting parent, a spectator and a player staying on after the match all feel at home.
Two graphic series of our own run along the walls. History of Padel tells the story of the sport; Anatomy of Padel takes the court and the equipment apart — so waiting comes with something to read.
At the centre of the ground floor stands a round bar with a terrazzo top and ribbed terracotta cladding. Above it, the curved edge of the gallery slab. Together they make the centre of the hall. From the bar stools there is a court in both directions.
A steel spiral stair with timber treads and light concealed beneath each tread links the two levels. The gallery holds café tables and treadmills behind a railing above the courts — the game can be followed from above.
The materials counter the hardness of sport: terrazzo floors, ribbed tiles, timber benches and warm concealed light in the changing rooms, where the men's and women's sides each have their own colour code; a blue-grey wall and oval, halo-lit mirrors in the washroom; woven rattan pendants and soft sofas along the courts.
